Maternity Pay and Maternity Benefits

The law is designed to protect women from unfair treatment within the workplace due to the fact that they are pregnant or they have taken maternity leave. As an employer, you have a duty to ensure that these rights are protected. Maternity rights in the workplace include:

  • The right to paid time off for antenatal care
  • The right to take maternity leave
  • The right to maternity pay
  • Protection against unfair treatment, discrimination or dismissal

If you, as an employer, do not agree to a parent’s request for flexible working hours, you may face a discrimination claim.

Employees have the right to leave work to attend to a family emergency. Parents who have been employed for at least a year can additionally take up to four weeks of unpaid parental leave per year, up to a maximum of eighteen weeks. Contact us to make sure your employees’ rights are protected.
