Tom Crittenden, Senior Associate

Tom joined Ackroyd Legal in November 2022. Tom qualified into a litigation and dispute resolution department in 2007 and has practiced in this field in West End and City of London firms.

Tom devises and deploys strategies to avoid disputes arising or escalating with a view to achieving cost effective and amicable solutions for the individuals and businesses he advises.

In circumstances where disputes cannot be readily solved Tom is able to draw on a wealth of experience to conduct proceedings in the High Court and the appellate courts of England and Wales, and through arbitration. Tom is also adept at conducting civil recovery proceedings pursued under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 in the criminal courts.

Tom is also accustomed to working with clients’ who require advice on disputes that cross borders and he is adept at dealing with issues concerning jurisdiction and the conflict of laws.

Tom has had the privilege of advising in some notable disputes including:

Acting for the Respondent in a jurisdiction challenge in the High Court, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court which included (amongst other things) a re-examination by the Supreme Court of the rule against reflective loss.

Acted for the Second Defendant and Appellant, Fairlight Art Ventures LLP in the Commercial Court and Court of Appeal in relation to the multi-million pound sale of a Dutch Old Master painting alleged to be a forgery. The dispute required the Courts to consider, amongst other things the construction and effect of back-to-back contractual obligations and the formation of a partnership under the Partnership Act 1890

Working alongside Mr Manji’s local legal representatives in first instance challenge to the jurisdiction of the Courts of the British Virgin Islands to hear a claim arising out of the acquisition of a business holding mobile telecommunications licenses in Tanzania

Acting for the Claimant in a £50 million dispute concerning the procurement, transportation and sale of petrochemical products involving businesses in the Middle East and Asia

Acting for the Defendant in relation to a dispute for a party to a joint venture concerned with the financing and acquisition of West African state owned utility company.
